The History of Symbian

The roots of Symbian and the Symbian Foundation stretch back to the very start of mobile computing, when smart minds coalesced around the idea of finding the best ways to mobilize computing—to help people do things better, faster, now.

From its earliest days, the idea that became Symbian was all about collaboration—starting with David Potter's early 1980s designs of games and office productivity software for Sinclair's personal computers, a partnership that launched the "Psion" name. Those programs helped give birth in 1984 to the Psion Organizer, the world's first handheld computer—and one that would quickly support a simple-to-use database programming language, OPL.

The collaborative support from the industry for the growing power of the Psion software base led to the historic formation in 1998 of Symbian, a joint venture between Psion and phone manufacturers Ericsson, Motorola, and Nokia. Over the next few years Symbian helped bring forth the explosion of mobile device innovation—with Symbian software at the base of more than 100 million phones by 2006.

In 2008, the next step of Symbian evolution took place, with Nokia purchasing all Symbian assets and starting the software down the path to open source. As the Symbian Foundation and all its members look to the future and the billions of forthcoming interconnected mobile devices, it will be innovative collaboration—working together —that will help make people more productive, more creative and more entertained than ever before.

  • 1980: Psion founded by David Potter
  • 1984: Psion Organiser launched
  • 1986: the "vastly improved" Psion Organiser II launches, with a simple-to-use database programming language, OPL.
  • 1987: Psion begins development of its "SIBO" ("SIxteen Bit Organiser") family of devices and its own new multitasking operating system called EPOC to run its PDA products.
  • 1989: First EPOC16 devices, the MC400 and MC200, ship with a primarily 1-bit, keyboard-operated graphical interface.
  • 1997: The first version of EPOC32 Release 1 appeared on the Psion Series 5 ROM v1.0. The EPOC32 operating system, at the time simply referred to as EPOC, was later renamed Symbian OS. EPOC32 was a pre-emptive multitasking, single user operating system with memory protection, which encourages the application developer to separate their program into an engine and an interface.
  • 1998: In June Psion Software became Symbian, a major joint venture between Psion and phone manufacturers Ericsson, Motorola, and Nokia. As of Release 6, EPOC became known simply as Symbian OS.
  • 1999: The Psion Series 5mx, Psion Series 7, Psion Revo, Diamond Mako, Psion netBook, netPad, GeoFox One, and Ericsson MC218 were released using ER5. A phone project was announced at CeBIT, the Phillips Illium/Accent, but did not achieve a commercial release.
  • 2000: The first phone, the Ericsson R380 was released using ER5u in November.
  • 2001: The first 'open' Symbian OS phone, the Nokia 9210 Communicator, was released in June 2001. Bluetooth support was added. Almost 500,000 Symbian phones were shipped in 2001, rising to 2.1 million the following year.
  • 2003: First shipment of Symbian OS 7.0 and 7.0s, an important Symbian release which appeared with all contemporary user interfaces including UIQ (Sony Ericsson P800, P900, P910, Motorola A925, A1000), Series 80 (Nokia 9300, 9500), Series 90 (Nokia 7710), Series 60 (Nokia 3230, 6260, 6600, 6670, 7610) as well as several FOMA phones in Japan. It also added EDGE support and IPv6. One million Symbian phones were shipped in Q1 2003, with the rate increasing to one million a month by the end of 2003.
  • 2004: Psion sells its stake in Symbian.
  • 2006: 100 millionth phone with Symbian OS is shipped.
  • 2008: Symbian acquired by Nokia; Symbian Foundation formed.

Symbian^3

Full HD output, Nokia N8 was the first device to support Symbian^3, the C7 became available on the UK market on the 22nd of October 2010, and the C6-01 started shipping on the 8th November 2010 and the E7 is schedueled for December 2010. Symbian^3 is a big improvement over Symbian^1 and now features single touch menus, and also further improvements will come in the first half of 2011 including: portrait qwerty keyboard, a new browser and split-screen text input. Nokia announced that updates to Symbian^3 interface based on Qt will be delivered gradually, as they are available, instead of waiting for Symbian^4, the previously planned major release which is now discontinued.

    Internet Pake Parabola

    Internet Broadband Satellite

    Skema Downstream - Upstream
    images01

Ilustrasi Broadband One Way Satellite, menggunakan Dual Connection. Upstream & Downstream secara terpisah. Upstream 56KBps (Dial-Up) & Downstream 2MBps (Satellite).

    Basic system requirement:

    Pentium 120MHz IBM PC
    32MB RAM
    2MB VGA card
Windows 95/98SE, NT atau 2000, Linux
PCI slot, sound card dan speakers
    30MB Hard Disk Space
DVB receiver card atau USB box
Koneksi Internet ke ISP (Dial-up | ISDN | Dedicated Line dan lain-lain.)
    Minimum Modem 28.8 kbps

images03LNB (Digital Loop C-Band LNB).

    One Way Satellite

Silahkan download dulu software SatcoDX yg terbaru!

Lakukan installasi hingga selesai. Kemudian klik Database Update.

    a. Nama-nama satellite.

Beberapa Langkah Mencari Satellite Target Menggunakan SatcoDX

    Software SatcoDX
    images07

Klik tombol “Show Selected Satellite” di sebelah kanan.

Kemudian download-lah software client-servernya. Setiap penyedia jasa one way satellite seperti isatasia ini pasti punya satu aplikasi client server untuk menghubungkan account Anda dengan database mereka.

Compare Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, many more

    • Form Suggestions: Firefox always had autocomplete, but 3.6 is supposed to be smart enough to give you autosuggestions when you are typing data into an online form you’ve never used before. We didn’t spend a lot of time testing this, but did find that when trying to post a comment to a blog we’d never visited before, the browser suggested our e-mail address (one we had used on many other forms) to complete the e-mail field.  It didn’t suggest our name for the name field or our Web site for the web field, however.
    • Stability: Mozilla says Firefox 3.6 is less likely to crash than prior versions. It didn’t crash on us during testing, but Firefox 3.57 has been pretty good about not crashing too.
    • Support for New Developer Technologies: Firefox 3.6 supports more features of HTML 5, including the ability to display videos at full screen, Web Open Font Format, CSS gradients, and the ability to show different content based on device orientation. These features won’t have an immediate impact for users, but will allow their favorite Web sites to start adding new features.
    Performance: Pretty Much a Wash
In addition to all the new features named above, Mozilla makes the ambitious claim that its browser has “Improved JavaScript performance, overall browser responsiveness, and startup time.” In an overview video on Firefox.com, Director of Firefox Development Mike Beltzner claims that Firefox 3.6 is 20-percent faster than 3.5, using the popular SunSpider JavaScript benchmark as an example.
To see how fast Firefox 3.6 really is and how it compares to its competitors, we installed the new browser, along with fresh copies of Firefox 3.57, Google Chrome 3.0.195.38, Google Chrome Beta 4.0.249.78, Opera 10.10, Safari 4.0.4, and Internet Explorer 8 on a brand new Lenovo IdeaPad U150. The IdeaPad was configured with a 1.3-GHz  Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 CPU, 4GB of RAM, a 5,400-rpm 320GB hard drive, and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.  None of the browsers had additional plug-ins or add-ons installed.
Rather than loading a bunch of Web pages and timing them, we used the same SunSpider benchmarks that Firefox cited in its own presentation. The SunSpider benchmark has some advantages over simply timing Web pages as it tests the browser’s processing capabilities without relying much on the speed of the Internet connection or the Web server, both of which can vary from load to load. It also tests a lot of different JavaScript rendering capabilities at once.

As you can see, Chrome and Safari clearly are the kings here, completing the test in around 900 milliseconds. Firefox 3.6 is indeed quite a bit faster than its predecessor, a good 15-percent by our math. I’m sure this number varies a bit, depending on one’s hardware and there can even be slight differences from one run to another. Firefox, Chrome, and Safari are in a different league than Microsoft’s market-leading browser, the latter being orders of magnitude slower than its competitors. Opera is also way behind Firefox, though not as bad as IE.
    Application Open Times
During any given computing session, you might open and close your browser several times as you switch to and from other tasks. So we also tested the speed at which each browser starts up, both cold (the first time during a session) and warm (after having been opened and closed before during that computing session).
To get accurate numbers, we used macros that display a timestamp before launching each browser and had the browsers open a 1-kilobyte local .htm file with a second timestamp  so we could see exactly how many seconds elapsed between the two timestamps. We performed each test 3 times and took the average. To make sure results were consistent from run to run, we disabled Windows 7′s Superfetch service, which does some caching of frequently-used apps.
Browser Cold Open (seconds) Warm Open (seconds)
    Chrome 3.0.195.38 3.2 0.4
    Chrome Beta 4.0.249.78 3.9 0.3
    Firefox 3.57 4.5 1.1
    Firefox 3.6 6.8 1.3
    Internet Explorer 8 17.9 9.8
    Opera 10.10 3.6 1.4
    Safari 4.0.4 5.2 0.9
The first thing we noticed looking at these results is how painfully slow Internet Explorer 8 is. If you’re a regular IE 8 user, you’ve probably seen that the IE window appears on screen much sooner than 17.9 seconds, but is unresponsive while it says “connecting …” for several seconds before opening its home page or, in our case, the 1k html file we had it open. Warm opening on IE 8 also took a virtual lifetime in comparison to Chrome, which lead the field by warm opening in a — blink and you’ll miss it — 0.4 seconds for the current release version and 0.3 for the new beta.
Surprisingly, Firefox 3.6 cold and warm opened slower than Firefox 3.57. While the warm opens were only a tiny .2 seconds apart, the cold opens took about 50-percent longer, going from 4.5 seconds to 6.8. In our view, that’s a pretty big step backward.
All of these open times are probably faster when you use a faster processor a faster hard drive than those found on our testbed. However, as the most frequently used application on the PC, the Web browser needs to open quickly, even on an low voltage system or a netbook.
    Verdict
Firefox has taken a few steps forward with a couple of new features and better support for new Web development technologies. The personas feature is particularly appealing and should be very popular. Those who like a highly-customizable, standards compliant browser that has tons of add-ons and is relatively fast will love Firefox 3.6. If you’re already a Firefox user, you should definitely upgrade.
However, when it comes to speed, both opening and rendering, Google Chrome remains the king of the hill on Windows. Though Safari offers similar SunSpider rendering speeds, its open times are not as good and it doesn’t have the wonderfully slim UI and detachable tabs that Chrome has. With an incredibly space-efficient interface devoid of unnecessary toolbars and window widgets, Chrome feels much more lightweight than Firefox.  In order to take Firefox to the next level, Mozilla needs to match that level of agility.

    What is Android?

Android is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. The Android SDK provides the tools and APIs necessary to begin developing applications on the Android platform using the Java programming language.

    Features

    • Application framework enabling reuse and replacement of components
    • Dalvik virtual machine optimized for mobile devices
    • Integrated browser based on the open source WebKit engine
    • Optimized graphics powered by a custom 2D graphics library; 3D graphics based on the OpenGL ES 1.0 specification (hardware acceleration optional)
    • SQLite for structured data storage
    • Media support for common audio, video, and still image formats (MPEG4, H.264, MP3, AAC, AMR, JPG, PNG, GIF)
    • GSM Telephony (hardware dependent)
    • Bluetooth, EDGE, 3G, and WiFi (hardware dependent)
    • Camera, GPS, compass, and accelerometer (hardware dependent)
    • Rich development environment including a device emulator, tools for debugging, memory and performance profiling, and a plugin for the Eclipse IDE

    Android Architecture

The following diagram shows the major components of the Android operating system. Each section is described in more detail below.
    Android System Architecture

    Applications

Android will ship with a set of core applications including an email client, SMS program, calendar, maps, browser, contacts, and others. All applications are written using the Java programming language.

    Application Framework

By providing an open development platform, Android offers developers the ability to build extremely rich and innovative applications. Developers are free to take advantage of the device hardware, access location information, run background services, set alarms, add notifications to the status bar, and much, much more.
Developers have full access to the same framework APIs used by the core applications. The application architecture is designed to simplify the reuse of components; any application can publish its capabilities and any other application may then make use of those capabilities (subject to security constraints enforced by the framework). This same mechanism allows components to be replaced by the user.
Underlying all applications is a set of services and systems, including:
    • A rich and extensible set of Views that can be used to build an application, including lists, grids, text boxes, buttons, and even an embeddable web browser
    • Content Providers that enable applications to access data from other applications (such as Contacts), or to share their own data
    • A Resource Manager, providing access to non-code resources such as localized strings, graphics, and layout files
    • A Notification Manager that enables all applications to display custom alerts in the status bar
    • An Activity Manager that manages the lifecycle of applications and provides a common navigation backstack
For more details and a walkthrough of an application, see the Notepad Tutorial.

    Libraries

Android includes a set of C/C++ libraries used by various components of the Android system. These capabilities are exposed to developers through the Android application framework. Some of the core libraries are listed below:
    • System C library - a BSD-derived implementation of the standard C system library (libc), tuned for embedded Linux-based devices
    • Media Libraries - based on PacketVideo's OpenCORE; the libraries support playback and recording of many popular audio and video formats, as well as static image files, including MPEG4, H.264, MP3, AAC, AMR, JPG, and PNG
    • Surface Manager - manages access to the display subsystem and seamlessly composites 2D and 3D graphic layers from multiple applications
    • LibWebCore - a modern web browser engine which powers both the Android browser and an embeddable web view
    • SGL - the underlying 2D graphics engine
    • 3D libraries - an implementation based on OpenGL ES 1.0 APIs; the libraries use either hardware 3D acceleration (where available) or the included, highly optimized 3D software rasterizer
    • FreeType - bitmap and vector font rendering
    • SQLite - a powerful and lightweight relational database engine available to all applications

    Android Runtime

Android includes a set of core libraries that provides most of the functionality available in the core libraries of the Java programming language.
Every Android application runs in its own process, with its own instance of the Dalvik virtual machine. Dalvik has been written so that a device can run multiple VMs efficiently. The Dalvik VM executes files in the Dalvik Executable (.dex) format which is optimized for minimal memory footprint. The VM is register-based, and runs classes compiled by a Java language compiler that have been transformed into the .dex format by the included "dx" tool.
The Dalvik VM relies on the Linux kernel for underlying functionality such as threading and low-level memory management.

    Linux Kernel

Android relies on Linux version 2.6 for core system services such as security, memory management, process management, network stack, and driver model. The kernel also acts as an abstraction layer between the hardware and the rest of the software stack.
